Lorraine Allen’s op-ed “An Empty Box is the Perfect Christmas Gift” (Dec. 20) reminded me of one Christmas morning almost 30 years ago. My eldest daughter, 2 or 3 years old, was surrounded by a plethora of gifts from Santa and many doting aunts, uncles and grandparents. At a certain point in the excitement, she froze and started bawling in bewilderment of so much stuff!

I remembered I had saved an empty appliance box in the garage to stash the gifts from curious eyes. So I put it in the middle of the living-room floor and cut out spaces to serve as windows and a door. The crying fit stopped instantly. She crawled in and out of that box all day long, having the grandest time in that new little house of her own. Creativity trumped overstimulus and ruled the day—and saved our sanity, too.
